The Ultimate Guide to the Best Honeymoon Locations in Greece

If you are planning a romantic getaway and searching for the best honeymoon locations in Greece, you are in the right place! Greece has long been a dream destination for couples, with its charming villages, idyllic islands, and picture-perfect sunsets. From the historic streets of Athens to the chic harbor town of Naoussa in Paros, the incredible caldera views of Santorini, the medieval charm of Rhodes, and the lively energy of Heraklion in Crete, these are truly some of the best honeymoon locations in Greece.

Brian and I actually hoped to honeymoon in Greece ourselves, but the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted our original wedding plans. We ended up getting married in January 2022 and honeymooned in Hawaii instead, since Greece is not exactly the tropical beach paradise you picture in the winter months. That said, I have personally visited all of these incredible destinations, albeit not on a honeymoon, and I can confidently say that they are romantic, dreamy, and absolutely worthy of any couple's post-wedding escape. I also have friends who did honeymoon on some of these islands and could not stop raving about their experiences. So whether you are planning for spring, summer, or early fall, these are hands-down some of the best honeymoon locations in Greece to consider.

Table of Contents:

Based on my own travels, and feedback from friends who actually honeymooned in Greece, these spots are equal parts romantic, scenic, and unforgettable. Without further ado, let's dive into the best honeymoon locations in Greece!

Athens

Kicking off our list of the best honeymoon locations in Greece is Athens! As home to Greece’s main international airport (Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos), Athens is one of the easiest and most convenient starting points for your honeymoon. It is the perfect destination for couples who want to combine a romantic getaway with rich cultural experiences, from exploring iconic landmarks like the Acropolis to visiting world-class museums, and enjoying Greek cuisine. Plus, Athens makes a great base for tacking on a trip to another European city or jetting off to one of the many stunning Greek islands that round out my list of the best honeymoon locations in Greece.

Acropolis_Athens_Greece_2024

You do not need a lot of time to see all of the top attractions and Athens museums; three days is sufficient. Although, being on your honeymoon, I do not blame you if you are hoping to see the sites at a slower pace and spend an extra day (or two) in Greece's capital city.

Top Things to Do in Athens on Your Honeymoon

While I could easily write an entire blog on the top things to do in Athens, I will keep this list short and sweet. This list highlights the must-see sights and most memorable experiences that are perfect for a honeymoon; think iconic landmarks, cultural gems, and spots that capture the spirit of the city. These are the top things to do in Athens that truly showcase why it is one of the best honeymoon locations in Greece.

  • Visit the Acropolis & Ancient Agora: No trip to Athens is complete without a visit to the city’s two most important archaeological sites: the Acropolis and the Ancient Agora. The Acropolis, perched high above the city, is home to the iconic Parthenon, an enduring symbol of ancient Greece and a must-see for first-time visitors to Athens. Just downhill, the Ancient Agora offers a quieter, more expansive glimpse into daily life in Ancient Athens, where citizens once gathered for politics, commerce, and conversation. Together, these two sites offer a way to explore the city’s history, an ideal activity for couples looking to add a meaningful cultural and historical experience to their honeymoon itinerary. If you are interested in learning more about visiting the Acropolis, be sure to check out my Visiting the Acropolis: History, Highlights, and How to Get Tickets blog post

Caryatids_Acropolis_Athens

  • Check Out the Athens Museums: Spending part of your honeymoon exploring Athens’ world-class museums is a great way to connect with the city’s rich cultural heritage, and, of course, each other. The Acropolis Museum, located just a short walk from the historic site itself, offers a beautifully curated look at the art and artifacts of ancient Athens, while the National Archaeological Museum houses one of the most important collections of ancient Greek art in the world. Whether you are history lovers or simply curious travelers, these museums add depth and meaning to your time in the city and help make Athens one of the best honeymoon locations in Greece. If you are interested in visiting either of these two incredible museums in Athens while on your honeymoon, check out my blog post From the Acropolis to Antiquities: The Best Athens Museums

  • Explore the Monastiraki & Plaka Neighborhoods: No honeymoon in Athens is complete without spending time in the charming neighborhoods of Monastiraki and Plaka. These historic districts are some of the most picturesque in the city, with winding streets, beautiful architecture, and vibrant squares perfect for wandering hand-in-hand. You will find a mix of stylish boutiques, artisan shops, and inviting tavernas that are ideal for a leisurely lunch or a romantic dinner. Beyond the shopping and dining, these neighborhoods are also home to important cultural sites, including the Roman Agora, Temple of Hephaestus (located inside the Ancient Agora), and the Monastiraki Flea Market.

  • Enjoy a Cocktail (or two!): Athens is also home to a few upscale cocktail bars that I absolutely love, which are perfect for winding down after a leisurely day of sightseeing, shopping, and indulging in some delicious Greek food. Two of my favorite cocktail bars, The Clumsies and Baba au Rum, offer a great way to enjoy a romantic evening in the city.

Where to Stay in Athens

Monastiraki is one of the best neighborhoods for honeymooners to stay in Athens, thanks to its centralized location within the city, transit connections, and walkability. It is also worth noting that Monastiraki is my favorite neighborhood to stay in Athens! As far as hotels go, I love the Hellenic Vibes Smart Hotel in Athens. It is located just steps from Monastiraki Square, with large rooms, and wonderful staff. The included breakfast is also top-notch! The hotel is walking distance to the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora, and more. Here are some of the other hotels that I have stayed at, or friends and family have stayed at, that I can also highly recommend in Athens:

Paros

Paros easily deserves its place among the best honeymoon destinations in Greece, and the charming town of Naoussa is a big reason why. (The island's close proximity to Athens and the Greek mainland also helps! Paros can be reached by ferry from Athens in as little as 2 hours and 45 minutes.) Tucked along the island’s northern coast, Naoussa is simply beautiful, with whitewashed buildings, colorful fishing boats bobbing in the harbor, and winding lanes filled with stylish boutiques and incredible restaurants. While it certainly looks a lot like Mykonos with its picturesque, whitewashed streets, Naoussa offers a much more tranquil and relaxing getaway than the busy, party-heavy island of Mykonos.

Naoussa Harbor_2021_Paros

Naoussa is close to some of Paros' most beautiful beaches, making it an ideal base for honeymooners looking to relax, swim, and soak up the sun. Personally, Paros is my favorite island in Greece, and Naoussa is hands-down my favorite town in the Cyclades. It has the perfect balance of beauty, atmosphere, and laid-back luxury (without breaking the bank!), making it a dream honeymoon destination.

Top Things to Do in Paros on Your Honeymoon

Paros is the perfect island for couples looking to slow down and truly relax, which is what makes it one of the best honeymoon locations in Greece. From scenic walks around Naoussa’s charming harbor to lazy afternoons at the beach, the island offers just the right mix of low-key activities and romantic experiences. Here are a few of the top things to do in Paros on your honeymoon:

  • Explore Naoussa Harbor & the Venetian Fortress: Wander hand-in-hand through the charming Naoussa Harbor, where traditional fishing boats are docked alongside trendy cafés, cute boutiques, and incredible restaurants. The Venetian Fortress that is the centerpiece of Naoussa Harbor adds a touch of history and makes for a great photo backdrop for honeymoon memories.

Venetian Fortress_Naoussa Harbor_2021_Paros

  • Savor a Glass of Locally-Produced Wine at Moraitis Estate: Just a short walk from Naoussa Harbor, Moraitis Estate is an amazing spot to slow down and enjoy a wine tasting together. With a beautiful patio and local wines, it is a relaxing and romantic way to spend an afternoon, while simultaneously learning more about Paros' winemaking history. Moraitis Estate is one of my favorite wineries in Greece. Their wine is really good and the staff are amazing. If you are looking to expand your activities beyond a casual wine tasting during your honeymoon in Paros, tours of the winery are also available.

Moraitis Winery_Naoussa_Paros_Landscape_2

  • Relax at the Beach: Whether you prefer a quiet strip of sand or a lively beach club, Paros has no shortage of beautiful beaches for you to relax and enjoy. Some of the most popular beaches include Golden Beach, Kolymbithres Beach, and Marchello Beach. If you are seeking out a more lively beach club, complete with sunbeds, food, and drinks, Paros offers several choices. In Parikia, Cabana is favored spot, while in Naoussa, the Cosme Beach Club at the Cosme Hotel provides a chic, upscale option. If you are planning to spend a day at a beach club while on your honeymoon in Paros, I definitely recommend making an advance reservation, especially during the peak summer months of June through August.

Naoussa_Paros_Beach

  • Enjoy a Boat Ride Around the Island: One of the most romantic ways to see Paros is from the water. The boat tour Brian and I did on our first trip to Paros included stops for swimming, local wine, and a delicious lunch. Sunset cruises are also available. I highly recommend booking a boat tour directly from the providers at Naoussa Harbor. However, if you are looking to book a boat excursion in advance of your honeymoon to Paros, I recommend Anna Maria Cruises and Pantasoulas Daily Cruises

Where to Stay in Paros

Paros has two main coastal towns, Naoussa and Parikia. Parikia is home to the main port on the island and serves as its transportation hub. While Parikia is beautiful, the real charm and ideal honeymoon destination on Paros is Naoussa. This postcard-perfect fishing village, turned upscale beach resort town, is truly one of my favorite places in all of Greece. The charming whitewashed streets, the picturesque harbor full with colorful fishing boats, and the iconic ruins of the 15th-century Venetian fortress provide authentic Greek charm, while the town simultaneously offers all of the modern comforts for a romantic getaway.

Angels Pillow_Landscape_Naoussa_Paros

Hotels in Naoussa are available at a variety of price points. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Angels Pillow in Naoussa! This small boutique hotel is budget-friendly, welcoming, and definitely a perfect spot for a honeymoon retreat. (The hotel is adults only!) The included breakfast is a great perk and their pool area makes for a relaxing afternoon. Some of the other hotels I recommend in Naoussa, include:

Santorini

Santorini is without question one of the best honeymoon locations in Greece, and its dramatic landscape, romantic villages, and world-renowned sunsets make it easy to see why. (Its location also makes it a convenient stop on a multi-island itinerary—easily reached by ferry from nearby Cycladic islands like Paros or Mykonos, or by flight from Athens.) Shaped by a volcanic eruption thousands of years ago, Santorini’s unique caldera cliffs and breathtaking views set it apart from anywhere else in the world. The island is also steeped in ancient history, from the Minoan ruins of Akrotiri to its historic hilltop towns, adding depth to its natural beauty.

Fira_Santorini_Landscape

Oia and Fira are Santorini’s two most famous towns, with whitewashed buildings perched on the cliffs, narrow paths overlooking the Aegean Sea, and countless spots to enjoy a glass of local wine while watching the sunset. Santorini is home to a thriving wine industry, thanks to its volcanic soil, making wine tasting a must-do for honeymooners in Santorini. While the island can get busy, especially in the summer months, there is still something incredibly romantic about wandering the island's narrow streets in the early morning before it gets too busy or enjoying a sunset sail on a catamaran around the caldera. With its stunning scenery, history, and luxurious atmosphere, Santorini is undeniably one of the best honeymoon locations in Greece.

Top Things to Do in Santorini on Your Honeymoon

Santorini is made for honeymooners, with its dramatic views, romantic atmosphere, and unforgettable experiences. Whether you are enjoying a glass of local wine, sailing along the caldera, or simply taking in a postcard-perfect sunset, the island offers plenty of ways to celebrate your new life together. Here are some of the top things to do in Santorini that make it one of the best honeymoon locations in Greece.

  • Visit the Wineries: Visiting the wineries in Santorini is a must for honeymooners looking to unwind with a glass of wine and an incredible view. Two of my favorite wineries in Santorini are Venetsanos Winery and Santo Wines, both perched on the edge of the caldera with panoramic views that are just as memorable as the wine itself. These wineries offer relaxed, casual wine tastings, perfect for trying local varietals like Assyrtiko, and great food. These two wineries are located within walking distance of each other in Megalochori. If it is your first time in Santorini and you do not want to be bothered by taking public buses or driving to the wineries, I highly recommend that you consider booking a winery tour though our affiliate partner, GetYourGuide.

  • Soak in the Caldera Views: The caldera views in Santorini are nothing short of breathtaking and a major reason why the island is one of the best honeymoon locations in Greece. Formed by a massive volcanic eruption around 1600 BC, the caldera is a dramatic crescent shape, surrounded by the picturesque Aegean Sea, and home to the beautiful whitewashed towns of Oia and Fira, perched along its cliffs. Oia is undeniably incredible and the town that most people associate with Santorini. While I definitely recommend visiting Oia, I think it is best to go early in the morning, before the cruise ship crowds arrive and the narrow streets become too packed. While Oia is famous for sunsets, the crowds at that hour can make it feel more stressful than romantic. Instead, take in the incredible views of the caldera from quieter spots along the island, whether it is from a peaceful café in Imerovigli, a winery terrace in Megalochori, or even your hotel balcony (assuming you booked a room with a view). The caldera is almost always visible in Santorini, and soaking in the caldera views is a true pinch-me moment. It is hard to believe that something so beautiful is a real place and not just a painting or photoshopped picture. What more could you ask for on your honeymoon than these incredible views?

  • Book a Catamaran Cruise: A catamaran cruise around Santorini is one of the most unforgettable honeymoon experiences that you can have on the island. It is a relaxing and scenic way to see the caldera from the water, stop at the volcanic hot springs, and swim in the Aegean Sea. Most catamaran cruises in Santorini include a freshly prepared lunch or dinner on board, along with plenty of local wine and drinks to enjoy as you sail around the island. If you choose a sunset cruise, you will be treated to one of the most romantic views imaginable: the sun dipping below the horizon as the sky turns gold, pink, and orange, all from the deck of a boat. It is moments like these that make Santorini one of the best honeymoon locations in Greece. If you are looking for highly rated catamaran cruises in Santorini that fit your honeymoon itinerary, check out these options from our affiliate partner, GetYourGuide.

  • Catch the Sunset: The sunset in Santorini is magical. As the sun dips behind the caldera, the sky glows with shades of gold, pink, orange, and lavender, casting a warm light over the island’s whitewashed buildings and sparkling sea. Whether you are watching from a cliffside restaurant, the crowded streets in Oia, a winery in in Megalochori, or out on the water during a catamaran cruise, the experience feels almost surreal. Catching the sunset in Santorini is one of those moments that captures the essence of a honeymoon: peaceful, breathtaking, and unforgettable.

Where to Stay in Santorini

Santorini has two main towns: Fira (Thira) and Oia. To be the most centrally located, I recommend staying in Fira for your honeymoon in Santorini. I have personally stayed in Fira on my prior visits to Santorini and while it may not be the most romantic town on the island, you do not need a rental car or an ATV like you would if you were to stay in Imerovigli or Megalochori. Oia, in my opinion, is too crowded with tourists to really enjoy, although it is beautiful and you should visit it during your honeymoon in Santorini! My friends who have honeymooned in Santorini have both stayed in Imerovigli and while the town is gorgeous, it is more remote and you will need some form of transportation to get around (unless, that is, you are planning on staying exclusively on your hotel's property in Imerovigli). With all of that being said, here are some of the hotels that I recommend in Fira, Santorini:

Rhodes

Rhodes is the largest island in the Dodecanese and one of the most fascinating destinations in Greece, especially for couples who are looking for a mix of history, culture, and a beachside getaway. Known as the Island of the Knights, Rhodes was once home to the powerful Knights of St. John, who left behind an incredibly well-preserved medieval Old Town that is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wandering through its cobblestone streets, feels like stepping back in time. Outside of Rhodes Town, the whitewashed village of Lindos is a must-visit. Perched on a hillside overlooking the sea, sits the Acropolis of Lindos, the ruins of an ancient citadel dating back to the 4th century BC, offering panoramic views that are among the best on the island.

Dolphins Sculpture_Rhodes

However, visiting Rhodes is more than just wandering the historic Old Town and seeing the Acropolis of Lindos. The island offers beautiful beaches, crystal-clear water, and plenty of opportunities to enjoy long, leisurely meals at seaside tavernas. For honeymooners, Rhodes is a perfect mix of romantic relaxation and sightseeing on an island that feels a little bit more off of the beaten path compared to the more well-known Cycladic Islands (like Mykonos and Santorini). While Rhodes is more remote and difficult to tack-on to an island-hopping itinerary via ferry, the island does have an airport (Rhodes Airport) which has regular flights to Athens, Crete, and other cities within Europe (including, London, Brussels, and Milan). With its rich past, diverse landscapes, and laid-back atmosphere, Rhodes is truly one of the best honeymoon locations in Greece.

Top Things to Do in Rhodes on Your Honeymoon

Rhodes offers the perfect mix of cultural experiences and relaxation, making it one of the best honeymoon locations in Greece. Whether you are wandering through the winding, medieval streets of Old Town, lounging on a sunny beach, or exploring the whitewashed village of Lindos and its ancient acropolis, there is something here for every couple. Here are a few of my top recommendations for things to do in Rhodes on your honeymoon.

  • Explore Old Town Rhodes/Medieval City of Rhodes: Old Town Rhodes, also called the Medieval City of Rhodes, is my favorite part of the island and it is an especially romantic experience for honeymooners who appreciate the island's history and medieval architecture. Surrounded by imposing medieval walls, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is filled with winding streets, hidden courtyards, and centuries-old buildings. One of the top attractions in the Old Town is the Palace of the Grand Master of Knights, a 14th-century fortress built by the Knights of St. John that now houses a museum. Nearby, walk down the Street of the Knights of Rhodes, a beautifully preserved cobblestone road lined with the former inns of knights, each representing a different European nation. Do not miss the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes, located in the former Hospital of the Knights (Knights Hospitaller), where you will find ancient and medieval artifacts. Between sightseeing, you can find plenty of charming cafés and plazas to pause, people-watch, and soak in the atmosphere. Old Town is a place where you can get lost together - both literally in the winding streets and in the beauty of it all - making it one of the most memorable parts of a honeymoon in Rhodes.

Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights_Rhodes_Exterior Old Town Rhodes_Quiet Street

  • Relax at the Beach: Rhodes has no shortage of beautiful beaches and several are conveniently located near the Old Town and port, making them ideal for honeymooners who want to mix sightseeing with seaside relaxation. Elli Beach is the most accessible option, just a short walk from the Old Town. (Elli Beach is the one that I visited during my time in Rhodes.) Elli Beach is a lively beach with chair and umbrella rentals, bars, restaurants, and more right along the beachfront. The water is clear and calm, perfect for an afternoon swim after a morning of exploring the Old Town. There are numerous other beaches on the island, so if you are looking for a secluded stretch of sand or a beach with watersports activities, check out this complete listing from Greeka of the beaches in Rhodes

Sunset on Elli Beach_Rhodes

  • Visit the Picturesque Village of Lindos & the Acropolis of Lindos: Visiting the village of Lindos is one of the most romantic experiences you can have on your honeymoon. This charming whitewashed village, set against a dramatic hillside and overlooking turquoise water, is impossibly picturesque. Its narrow, winding alleyways are lined with bougainvillea-covered houses, small boutiques, and cute tavernas offering sweeping views of the sea. However, the real highlight in Lindos is the Acropolis of Lindos, perched above the quaint village. Reaching the Acropolis of Lindos requires a bit of a walk (approximately 20 to 30 minutes, uphill), but the views from the top are well worth it. The ancient ruins here date back to the 4th century BC and include the remains of a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena. Plus, visiting Lindos is easy since public buses run between Rhodes Town (Old Town Rhodes) and Lindos, regularly. To view the bus schedule and route, please visit the KTEL Rhodes website.

Where to Stay in Rhodes

I recommend staying either within Old Town Rhodes or along one of the nearby beaches, like Elli Beach, as this area offers the perfect blend of convenience and charm. With so much within walking distance, including historic sites, shops, restaurants, and the beach, you can easily explore the area without needing a car or relying heavily on public transportation. Staying in this area of Rhodes provides an ideal base for honeymooners who want to balance relaxation and sightseeing, with plenty of romantic spots to dine, unwind, and soak in the island’s atmosphere. A few of the top-rated hotels in Old Town and the nearby beaches, include:

Crete

Crete is the largest of the Greek Islands and its capital, Heraklion, is one of the best honeymoon locations in Greece. With its historic landmarks and close proximity to beautiful beaches and other nearby islands, Heraklion combines culture, convenience, and coastal charm. It is also one of the few destinations in Greece, like Santorini, that stays open to tourists year-round, making it a great option no matter when you are planning your honeymoon. Obviously, there is more to see in Crete than just Heraklion. Since I have personally spent time in Heraklion, I will focus my Greek honeymoon recommendations in this blog post on this area of Crete. Heraklion is also the most convenient transportation hub on the island, with Crete’s largest international airport and main ferry port located right in the city.

Heraklion Port_Castello del Molo_Crete

History lovers will want to explore Knossos Palace, the most important archeological site on Crete and the center of ancient Minoan civilization. In the city, the Heraklion Archaeological Museum houses one of the most significant collections of Minoan artifacts in the world and it is easily one of the best archaeological museums in Greece. Strolling through Heraklion's Old Town, you will find a mix of Venetian architecture, boutique shops, and authentic tavernas serving fresh seafood and local specialities.

Roundabout_Heraklion_Crete

Heraklion's port offers fast and easy ferry connections to Santorini and some of the other Cycladic islands, making it a strategic (and scenic) part of any Greek Island-hopping itinerary. Crete also has three airports, with the ones in Heraklion and Chania offering international flights to cities across Europe, as well as Rhodes and Athens. Crete, with its rich history, fantastic cuisine, and a blend of cultural and seaside experiences, rightfully earns its place as one of the best honeymoon locations in Greece.

Top Things to Do in Heraklion, Crete on Your Honeymoon

Crete is full of history, natural beauty, and delicious food and wine, making it a perfect destination for couples looking to mix culture and relaxation on their honeymoon. Whether you are wandering through a museum in Heraklion, sipping wine in a local vineyard, or exploring the ruins of one of Europe's oldest civilizations, there is no shortage of memorable experiences. From scenic beaches to centuries-old fortresses, here are some of the top things to do in Heraklion, Crete on your honeymoon.

  • Visit the Museums in Heraklion: Heraklion is home to a handful of museums, two of which I absolutely adored on my visit and are perfect for honeymooners interested in history, art, and culture. The Heraklion Archaeological Museum is one of the most important museums in Greece and a must-visit while in Crete. It houses the world's largest collection of Minoan artifacts, including intricately detailed pottery and incredible mosaics that bring this ancient civilization to life. It is the perfect place to deepen your understanding of the island before or after visiting the nearby Knossos Palace. Just a short walk away is the Historical Museum of Crete which offers an expansive look at the island's more recent history. One of its highlights is a pair of paintings by El Greco (Doménikos Theotokópoulos), who was born in Crete before becoming one of the most influential painters of the Spanish Renaissance. Quiet, well-curated, and rich with insight, both of these museums make for an enriching stop during your honeymoon in Heraklion.

  • Check Out Nearby Wineries: Like Paros and Santorini, Crete has a thriving wine industry and visiting one (or more!) of the wineries near Heraklion make for a great day-trip on your honeymoon. Crete has been producing wine for over 4,000 years, dating back to the Minoan civilization, and today, the Heraklion region is the island’s largest and most active wine-producing area. Some of the most popular wineries in Heraklion include: Lyrarakis Winery, Domaine Paterianakis, Douloufakis Winery, and Diamantakis Winery. The easiest way to visit the wineries near Heraklion is on a tour and our affiliate partner, GetYourGuide, has a number winery tours to fit your honeymoon itinerary.
  • Enjoy the Views from Castello del Molo (Historic Fortress): The Castello del Molo, also known as Koules Fortress, is a must-visit for honeymooners in Heraklion. Built by the Venetians in the early 16th century to protect the harbor, this fortress has withstood the test of time. Today, the restored fortress is open to visitors interested in walking its sturdy ramparts and enjoying some of the best panoramic views of the Sea of Crete and Heraklion's picturesque harbor. For newlyweds especially, a stroll along the old harbor and up through the fortress is both relaxing and atmospheric, perfect for capturing a romantic sunset or simply enjoying a peaceful moment together in Heraklion.

  • Relax at the Beach: Heraklion and its surrounding coast has a number of beaches that are perfect for honeymooners. Some of the closest beaches to Heraklion include: Ammoudara Beach (5 miles/8 kilometers), Karteros Beach (5 miles/8 kilometers), Amnissos Beach (5.5 miles/9 kilometers), and Tobrouk Beach (6.2 miles/10 kilometers). Ammoudara Beach is one of the most popular, since it is not only close to Heraklion, but it also has soft-sand, clear water, and chair and umbrella rentals. However, all of these beaches are fantastic options to complement your mix of honeymoon sightseeing and relaxation in Crete.
  • Explore Knossos Palace: Knossos Palace is a must-see during your honeymoon in Crete since it is easily one of the most significant archaeological sites in Europe. This sprawling Minoan palace complex, dating back to around 1900 BC, was the ceremonial and political heart of the Minoan civilization. For most visitors, the Throne Room is the highlight of their visit to Knossos Palace. Knossos Palace is 3.1 miles (5 kilometers) southeast of Heraklion and can be reached by public bus, taxi, and even the hop-on hop-off sightseeing buses. If you are interested in visiting the Knossos Palace on a guided tour, check out these options from our affiliate partner, GetYourGuide

Where to Stay in Crete

I recommend staying in Heraklion and using it as a base to take day trips to the Palace of Knossos, as well as the beautiful beaches and wineries nearby. Heraklion itself is walkable, filled with great restaurants, cute cafés, and plenty of charm, making it easy to enjoy without needing to rent a car. If you are planning your honeymoon in Crete, here are a few of the top-rated hotels in Heraklion to consider.

When to Honeymoon in Greece

There really is no wrong time to honeymoon in Greece, as long as you know what to expect. If your ideal honeymoon includes lazy beach days, warm weather, and island hopping, then the summer months (June through August) are going to be the best time to visit. This is peak season in Greece, when the islands are fully open, ferries run frequently, restaurants and beach bars are buzzing, and the weather is hot and dry, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and sunset cocktails by the sea.

Elli Beach_Rhodes

If you prefer smaller crowds and milder temperatures, the shoulder seasons of late April through May and mid-September through October, are also fantastic times to honeymoon in Greece. The weather is still warm, especially in September, and you will often find better deals on hotels and flights. Just note that some of the smaller islands, like Paros, begin to wind down in the off-season and many shops, restaurants, and hotels close between late October and April. On the other hand, larger islands such as Crete and Santorini remain open year-round.

Athens is also a great year-round destination, with its world-class museums, historic sites, and lively food scene open in every season. If you are honeymooning during the winter months, Athens is a great destination to pair with another European city.

Planning Tips for Your Greek Honeymoon

Planning a honeymoon in Greece is exciting, but a little preparation can go a long way in making your trip as smooth and stress-free as possible. Here are a few tips to help you plan your perfect romantic getaway:

  • Book Ferry Tickets in Advance: If you itinerary includes island-hopping (which I highly recommend, especially if you are visiting during the summer), use Ferryhopper to search and book ferry routes between the islands. This is not sponsored, I really just want to emphasize that Ferryhopper is really user-friendly and the easiest platform to use to make ferry reservations. Also, keep in mind that ferries can book up in advance during the summer, so reserve your spots ahead of time. Additionally, ferry rides can sometimes be delayed (or even canceled) due to weather. Try to build in some buffer time between activities and destinations to accommodate potential delays. (For example, do not book a sightseeing tour for a couple of hours after your ferry is scheduled to arrive in port.) One last item regarding ferries: if you get seasick or motion sick easily, pack Dramamine or another motion sickness medication as you might need it. When I island hopped via ferries in Greece, I had one ferry ride that was particularly nauseating and no one wants to get sick on their honeymoon!

Santorini Ferry Port

  • Be Prepared for Seasonal Closures: If you are planning on honeymooning in the off-season (late October through early April), keep in mind that many of the Greek Islands close to tourists. Instead, you will want to stick to year-round destinations like Athens, Crete, and/or Santorini for a better experience.
  • Consider a Mix of City & Island Time: Starting and/or ending your honeymoon in Athens is a great way to experience some culture and history alongside your time at the beach. It is also where most international flights to the United States arrive and depart, making logistics easy.
  • Embrace the Local Pace: Life in Greece moves slower, especially on the Greek Islands. Embrace it! Enjoy long lunches, late dinners, and lazy afternoons by the sea because it is all part of the charm and exactly as a honeymoon should be.

Best Honeymoon Destinations in Greece: A Quick Recap

Planning a honeymoon is one of the most exciting parts of wedding planning, and choosing Greece as your destination means you are already off to a dreamy start.
