How to Choose the Right Day Trip

Not every day trip is worth fitting into your itinerary. The best ones add something different to your trip without turning it into a long, exhausting travel day.

Before committing, think about:

  • Travel time vs. time on the ground
A good rule of thumb: if you are spending more time getting there than actually exploring, it may not be worth it. In general, we like to keep the total transportation time for a day trip to under five hours.
  • What your base city already offers
Before you book a day trip, take a look at what you might be skipping in your main destination, especially if it is your first visit. Cities like Rome or London have more than enough things to do to fill your time, and it is easy to underestimate how long major museums can take to fully explore.
  • How full your itinerary already is
Day trips work best when they compliment your plans, not compete with them. If your schedule is already packed, it is often better to slow down and stay local.
  • Seasonality & timing
Some day trips are much better at certain times of the year. Gardens, like those in Keukenhof and Giverny, shine in the spring and summer months, while Neuschwanstein Castle is stunning in autumn.
  • What you actually want out of your trip
Whether it is scenery, history, food, or a change of pace, choose a day trip that adds variety rather than repeating what you have already seen.

In most cases, one well-chosen day trip will be far more memorable than trying to squeeze in several.
